    2017 Solar Eclipse Sequence

As I was snapping away with my big telephoto in a nearby city park, a crowd had formed around the projected image I'd set up with a spotting scope and a white board. It was so fun to see people documenting their experience on their phones as they photographed themselves and each other. I took my fair share of shots as people handed me their phones. At one point, I was taking photos of people, while they were taking pictures of other people standing next to my eclipse display. Sharing this rare event with others turned out to be an unexpected and wonderful added experience!

The setting moon would rise again later this same day as the Supermoon.

  • The Powerball Moon

    The Powerball Moon

The drawing for the $1.5 Billion Powerball jackpot was the night I took this photograph. Just for the record, I didn't win. Dang it!

  • Milky Way Dream

    Milky Way Dream

It had rained on and off all day in mid January. Condensation on my lens caused this dreamy effect on the Milky Way. I did finally catch the problem, but the effect was money. Near Horseshoe Lake in central Arizona.

  • Moonset over Marble Canyon

    Moonset over Marble Canyon

The setting full moon illuminates Marble Canyon south of the Vermillion Cliffs. I shot the rising moon the night before, and it was quite the sight to behold. But wind made my shots very noisy from the high ISO necessary to get a fast shutter speed and not have camera shake in the shots. This next morning was calm and breeze-free with only the hooting of a nearby great-horned owl to break the silence.

  • Star and Airplane Trails

    Star and Airplane Trails

It was a pretty busy night above Sedona, Arizona the night I decided to give star stacking another try. One airplane seemed to deliberately fly around and around while my shots were going off. At the time I was not amused, but it did add an interesting touch to this shot after all.

  • Blood Moon Eclipse

    Blood Moon Eclipse

The eclipse reaches totality. I put two tele-extenders on my 80-200mm lens to get enough power to make this a viable shoot. I had a blast shooting over the course of 5 1/2 hours in the middle of the night. I'd get up, shoot and then go back to bed for 15 minutes. I repeated this over and over until I had the entire sequence of the eclipse.

Oh for a polarizer... My first attempt at shooting a solar eclipse was more challenging than I thought.
