Crossword and Cross Stitch
I took this shot of my parents when I was in college studying photography. This shot was so revealing of them and their life together at the time. There are both harmonies and big differences to be found. Mom is doing a cross-stitch needlepoint piece and is wearing a striped shirt. That's the way she worked, in a line from one side to the other. Dad is wearing a checked shirt and is doing a cross word puzzle. They both have cocktails. Mom has a glass of wine, while Dad is drinking a beer. The both have their same legs crossed, but are using opposite hands. The both share the same light source which also separates them in space. Both have their feet on footstools and are wearing glasses. All these things add up to a kind of harmony, but there also is this separation and solitude in what they are doing. Even though they're separated in physical space they are united at the same time. This also summed up their relationship at the time. They were more companions than a couple... doing their own thing and lost in their separate worlds. It was also telling of what was to come as they would divorce a couple years later.
