Home of the Arizona Cardinals football team, this stadium opened in 2007. It features an retractable roof and a playing field that slides outdoors when not in use. The removable playing surface allows for everything from trade shows to monster truck racing without damaging the field. It also allows the natural grass turf football field to get plenty of Arizona sunshine.
Since moving to the new stadium, the Cardinals have become a very strong team. They had an amazing season in 2008-09 and attended Super Bowl 43. Unfortunately, they lost by 4-points to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a thriller! This was the second Super Bowl in a row won on a last-minute touchdown pass.
The location of the stadium in Glendale was a product of much controversy. The first site near ASU was deemed unsafe as it was in the flightpath of jet traffic to Sky Harbor International Airport. Several other locations were also shot down before Glendale won the project. This area sports the Phoenix Coyote's Ice Rink (for the time being) as well at Westgate Shopping Center. Development was fast and furious before the real estate market took it's nose dive during the Great Recession. A Cabella's, numerous restaurants, a brewery, shopping, apartments, condos and a couple hotels all were built.
