SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK

This 16,000 acre park in southern Phoenix is the largest public park in the world. In 1924, 13,000 acres were purchased for $17,000. Bond programs in the 70s and 80s expanded the park to it's current size. Primary activities are hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding with over 50 miles of trails.

This shot shows the road leading up the mountain. Far off in the distance are the Estrella Mountains near Goodyear. South Mountain Park is bordered by Phoenix to the north, Laveen to the west and Ahwatukee to the south.
