Sitting 230+ feet below sea level, the Salton Sea is an ancient lake bed refilled by a canal breach in the early 1900s. In spite of the fact it is more saline than the Great Salt Lake, the Salton Sea was once a major commercial fishery. In 1976 and 1977, two successive 100-year tropical storms devastated the area and made many places uninhabitable like this house. The standing water just further illustrates the problem. No drainage. I also saw a thermal hotspring bubbling up out of the ground on this property. |
