FALL ON THE SALT RIVER

If you've ever gone tubing down the Salt River you should know this spot. Just downstream is where most people put in to cruise the river on inner tubes. This is a favorite pasttime for locals wanting to escape the extreme heat of the Arizona summer. It's a unique experience...you end up frying on the front side while the back side freezes from sitting in the cold water being released from under Saguaro Lake's dam.

It was a beautiful late-fall, early-winter day. The trees were finally changing colors even though it was nearly Christmas. There were a handful of people fly fishing for the stocked rainbow trout. I was just killing time waiting for the light to get to the magic hour when I shot this. As it turned out, this was the magic light and the shot I thought would be the best wasn't nearly as good. It's funny how that worked out. Here's the other shot...

Still, I learned never to judge a shot until I get home and see it on my computer screen. What seems like "The Location" or shot may not be and it pays to shoot everything like it's "The One."
