THE SALT RIVER

The Salt River is formed by the confluence of the White and Black Rivers. The river supplies a sucsession of lakes along it's route: Roosevelt, Apache, Canyon, Saguaro and Tempe Town Lakes. Outside of Fountain Hills, ithe Salt merges with the Verde River. I took this shot just off the highway between Globe and Showlow on the Apache Indian Reservation.

There isn't much water left by the time it reaches the outskirts of the Phoenix area. The river is reduced to a trickle and, for all intensive purposes, flows no further than Tempe Town Lake. However, this can change rapidly when heavy rains swell the river. During flood conditions, the inflatable dams at Tempe Town Lake are lowered to let flood waters flow through. It's quite a sight to see the Salt River raging during these infrequent floods.
