A short hike from a fenced parking lot leads to the only marked ancient dwelling in the Agua Fria National Monument. But it is far from the only site. I could hardly help from finding evidence of ancient peoples all around the Perry Mesa area. Everytime I would stop, there was another rock wall or outline of a building. I even found more contemporary structures undoubtedly built by miners. The construction method was the same, but pieces of tin and other man made materials were a dead give-away.
Pottery shards were literally everywhere near any of the sites I encountered. The insides were glazed a dark red, terra cotta color with a slight gloss. The other side of the shards were unglazed. I would imagine a pot with the glaze on the inside would hold water a lot better.
