The park road crossed a major railroad line and I saw trains everytime I went through. I noticed long trains have a single, diesel engine instead of a caboose these days. It's ironic... I had just seen the movie "Unstoppable" with Denzel Washington right before this trip and now know why they do that... There would still be someone in the back able to stop the train l if the engineer and conductor had a major problem up front.
I knew cabooses had gone away years ago. Trains had become so long, they were unable to see the entire train ahead. The caboose was an extra car as technology eliminated crewmen.
But having one of the engines at the rear sure makes sense. It can push as the others pull. And there's the breaking benefit Denzel enjoyed...
This shot really shows how windy it was on the second day in the Petrified Forest. A couple of ranch roads were kicking up the dust pretty good and no one was even driving on them...
