Arizona's largest natural lake is a mecca for wildlife. Large herds of elk roam the forests surrounding the lake. Pronghorn antelope graze the prairies of this forest highland. Bald and golden eagles, osprey and migratory waterfowl can also be seen. The level of water is extremely variable. During times of drought the lake goes almost completely dry. I was surprised to see so much water on this visit late in the summer.
Mormon Lake Lodge is found at the southern end of the lake. I remember this was a favorite restaurant of my family when I was a child living in Flagstaff. It was a pleasant drive at sunset. We almost always saw wildlife on the drive out, but often it was just an oblivious skunk walking down the center of the road.
