At around 2 acres, Potato Lake is more of a pond than a lake. It sits in a natural basin surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped hillside. A small, side creek probably fills it when it rains. Crayfish seemed plentiful, but I could see little else. It looked extremely shallow and was colder here than when I was driving in.
Nevertheless, this was a gorgeous, little water feature. I was excited when I grabbed the camera and headed down to the water. Even though this photo doesn't show it, there was a considerable space between the water's edge and the treeline. This really accentuates the feeling of being in a bowl.
The last of the morning fog was burning off in the shade. The water was dead calm. I could imagine big herds of elk clamoring down the slopes around the lake to get a drink.
