Daybreak was spectacular. I was bouncing back and forth between the two viewpoints as the sun was rising. I completely lucked out with a great, cottony sky.
The fire on the plateau had grown overnight and the smoke was more organized. It looked like a mini-volcano in the distance. I had watched big flames eat up entire trees in the night. It seemed to continue to grow throughout the day.
When I got home, I found out the Point and Woolsey fires were caused by lightning. It was very near Point Imperial in Grand Canyon National Park and the road was closed to the viewpoint. Thankfully, it was a relatively small fire in a previously burned area.
A forest service road does lead up the side of the plateau from this wilderness area into the national forest and GC nat'l park. What a great adventure that must be!
