A summer monsoon passes close to this geological feature located in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. The peak, Mt Wrightstown, can be seen to the left of Elephant Head.
Madera Canyon on this side of the Santa Ritas is a world-class birding location. A number of Mexican species can be seen here such as Elegant Trogons and Violet-crowned hummingbirds.
Hiking and mountain biking are also top activities here.
The summit of Mt. Wrightstown is a great 10.5 mile round-trip hike on the Old Baldy trail. A retiree from nearby Green Valley hiked the peak every day for a year and signed the guest book at the top.
Mt. Wrightson has it's dark side though. In 1958, three young Boy Scouts died on November 15 waiting out a freak snow storm. The survivors braved the elements and hiked down to safety.
This can also be an extremely dangerous peak in an electrical storm. There is no shelter on the exposed summit.
