Monarch Pass Highlands, Colorado

COLORADO HIGHLANDS

This highlands area south of Silverton, really shows how intense the terrain is. Several 14,000 ft peaks loom in the distance... Nearby Sultan Creek flows into the Animas River in the valley below. I saw a couple vehicles crawling their way out of this wilderness. What a great spot to set up a wilderness camp. I'll bet the fishing is amazing. A small hiking shack was on the last ridge before the big decent. It looked so inviting. My rental car rode lower than a pregnant ant's belly, so there would be no off-roading. I didn't have the time anyway.

I passed through Durango and drove south to Ship Rock. So far, I had been playing it by ear and eye. I had failed to bring or buy a map. I knew the route to Durango, but the way to Canyon de Chelly was a bit of a mystery. I knew it was west and south of Ship Rock...
