Arizona Panorama: Biography

G Reid Helms

ARTIST'S BIO

Born in Topeka, Kansas, I grew up in several states before living in Phoenix, Arizona for the first time in 1964 not far from where I live today. I also lived in Flagstaff for 8 years which I attribute my introduction to the natural world. While in grade school in Flagstaff, my family and I had many weekend trips to the numerous natural wonders of the area. I had been to the Grand Canyon seven times before I was eight years old. This made a huge impression on me that persists to this day.

My love for photography began in Nebraska after we moved there in 1973. I took my first panorama in the back yard of our home in North Platte. I used a 1916 Kodak Brownie camera and Scotch taped the back of the individual prints together making the finished panorama (shown here). I had numerous Polaroid cameras mostly as birthday presents and photographed family functions, holidays and family reunions. In high school, I was involved in the photography club and the yearbook staff. I studied art and photography at Nebraska Wesleyan University and worked in a commerical photographic studio shortly after college.

I moved back to Arizona in 1987. I took a job at Tucson Lifestyle magazine where I worked for the next 10 years as production manager. During this time, I photographed all over the southeastern part of Arizona. Panoramas were becoming a way I photographed regularly. Most of these hand-held panos would rise and fall according to the movement of the camera to capture the scene. I had a long way to go...

It wasn't until I purchased my first digital camera that I realized the power of panoramic photography and pursued it in earnest. I finally had an economical way to make complete panoramas. Post production computer techniques also helped with the stitching and color correction giving me complete control over every aspect of the finished panorama.

Photography and graphic design have gone hand-in-hand throughout my career . I have photographed covers and editorial features for most of the magazines I've worked for. Most recently, I've begun doing high-quality, real estate, virtual tour photography. Contact me at 520-309-5056 with any needs you might have.
